What’s the Difference Between a Hearing Instrument Dispenser and an Audiologist?
A hearing instrument dispenser is qualified to recommend, fit, and dispense hearing aids after passing a written and practical exam. Their training primarily focuses on assessing hearing and selecting appropriate hearing aids for clients.
An audiologist, however, undergoes extensive education, typically earning a doctoral degree in audiology (Au.D.). This includes years of academic coursework and clinical training in diagnosing and treating a wide range of hearing and balance disorders. In addition to recommending and fitting hearing aids, audiologists are also qualified to manage more complex conditions such as tinnitus and balance issues. They can prescribe both hearing aids and implantable devices, offering a more comprehensive approach to hearing healthcare.
